Looking for a fun, magical way to teach your child colors and shapes? The classic Eric Carle book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, comes to life in this new app entitled “The Very Hungry Caterpillar — Shapes and Colors“. Carle’s book was one of my absolute favorites growing up as I was drawn to the colorful illustrations presented throughout. Now children can learn shapes and colors from the same illustrations in this exciting app!
The Very Hungry Caterpillar — Shapes and Colors is the first in a series of apps featuring Eric Carle’s beloved character. According to the developer’s website: “You’ll love seeing your kids develop their reasoning skills — they’ll love solving puzzles, exploring a beautiful 3D playground and having fun with the Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
The app features more than 50 puzzles in six different categories. Each puzzle increases with difficulty to keep children engaged. Once each puzzle is completed, children are rewarded with different animations, such as:
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar floating away with a balloon
- Flowers magically growing
- Mechanical toys whirring into action
- Hidden doorways opening up for the Very Hungry Caterpillar to crawl into
While playing this app, children will tap and drag items, which will strengthen fine motor skills. They will also learn how to:
- Recognize basic and advanced shapes
- Sort and match shapes with similar colors
- Compare lighter and darker shades
- Identify patterns and sequences
- Organize shapes by size
- Combine shapes to complete pictures
