How to use Drop In with your Amazon Echo speakers

On Tuesday, I discussed how Echo users are able to make calls to other Echo users.  Amazon also released another feature that piggybacks on voice calling called Drop In.

The Drop In feature is very similar to Alexa-to-Alexa Calling.  However, it is slightly different than voice calling in that it allows users to drop in whenever.  When using voice calling, the person on the other end has to say, “Alexa, answer.”  But when dropping in, the person on the other end doesn’t have to answer.

You may be thinking, “That sounds creepy.”  Well, that was my initial thought as well, which then had me wondering why this is even a feature.  Allow me to explain some benefits of enabling Drop In:

  1. The Drop In feature transforms Echo devices into an intercom system if there are multiple Echo devices within the household; this is ideal for individuals with mobility impairments who may need to page a caregiver in another room
  2. Parents are able to quickly and easily check in on their children and/or older parents if they’re home alone.  The feature allows users to begin speaking immediately and hear anything happening near the speaker you’ve connected to
How to set up Drop In:

1. First, you’ll need at least one Echo device and a smartphone with the Alexa app installed.  As of right now, the feature is only compatible with:

  • Echo
  • Echo Dot (first- and second-generation)
  • Echo Show
  • Alexa App

2. Make sure your Alexa app is up-to-date.  Then, make sure you’re signed up for Alexa Calling and Messaging.

3. Enable Drop In for yourself or a contact.  Have contacts you’d like to drop in on also enable the feature.

4. Now, you can specify which Echo device you’d like to ring.  Click here to learn how to label each device.
