Free rides for children with disabilities to commemorate World Duchenne Awareness Day

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a “genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.”  It affects 1 in 3,500 newborn boys, and in rare cases can even affect girls.  September is Duchenne Action Month, and this Thursday, September 7th, is World Duchenne Awareness Day.

To commemorate Duchenne Awareness Day, Metaverse Entertainment is offering free rides to children with disabilities at its ten locations in five states.

The company’s idea to donate the experiences came after Scott Cunningham, Metaverse Entertainment’s Chief Financial Officer, watched a video of a child with disabilities enjoying a flight simulation experience.

Scott Cunningham states, “Kids with disabilities face obstacles every day.  We’re thrilled to be able to give them an experience that lets them feel what it’s like to fly, run, or swim and be just like any other kid.”

Metaverse Entertainment offers unique virtual reality experiences to everyone.  The full experience involves a chair with sensors to simulate movements and headsets that convey 3D imagery and sounds.  If children are unable to transfer onto the ride, they can use the virtual reality headsets comfortably from their wheelchairs.

Free rides will be given at the following Indiana locations to commemorate World Duchenne Awareness Day:

  • Indianapolis: Castleton Square Mall at 6020 E 82nd Street
  • Greenwood: Greenwood Mall at 1251 US Highway 31 N
  • Bloomington: College Mall at 2894 E 3rd Street
