When Jacqueline Child mentioned her disability on dating apps, she often faced negative reactions and outright rejection. She longed to find a platform where she could meet people who understood life with chronic illness and disabilities. So, she decided to make her own.
With the help of her sister, Alexa, Jacqueline launched Dateability in 2022, fulfilling a large need in the country at that time. That year, a CDC survey showed that more than 70 million U.S. adults — one in four — reported having a disability. They flocked to the app, with 1,000 people signing up in its first month. The user base has increased 10-fold in the last year, and it now includes Canada, Mexico and the U.K.
Dateability allows users to be fully transparent about their disabilities in the “Dateability Deets” section, where they can check off a broad list of terms to specify whether they use a wheelchair, have a service animal, need accommodations, etc.
This need for transparency stemmed from Jacqueline’s use of a feeding tube, which worried her in a world where most first dates revolve around dining.
Jacqueline is now witnessing thousands of users find comfort in being honest on the app and “feeling seen.”
One such user — Matthew Shapiro, a disability advocate with cerebral palsy — found his life changed after meeting someone on Dateability.
“It was the first time I ever felt fully seen and accepted and sort of loved in a relationship,” Shapiro said. “With traditional apps, you sort of have to hope that people are cool with who you are, but with Dateability, it’s all right there.”
