Video games are a powerful way for people to connect, compete, and have fun. But for many individuals with disabilities, traditional gaming equipment can create barriers that make it difficult to participate. The Adapted Gaming Lab at Easterseals Crossroads is working to change that by creating a space where gamers of all abilities can play together using accessible technology.

Located at Easterseals Crossroads, the Adapted Gaming Lab features a variety of gaming setups designed to support different access needs. The lab includes adapted gaming controllers and customizable input devices that allow players to control games in ways that work best for them.

Josh Anderson, Director of Assistive Technology at Easterseals Crossroads, helps lead the organization’s efforts to explore and demonstrate how assistive technology can expand access to gaming. The lab showcases a range of controllers and alternative input options designed to make gaming more accessible for players with different mobility, strength, and range-of-motion needs.

Adapted controllers can include large buttons, switches, joysticks, and other alternative inputs that can be positioned and configured based on a player’s individual preferences. By adjusting how players interact with the game, these technologies help remove barriers and open the door to a wider gaming experience.

The Adapted Gaming Lab is part of Easterseals Crossroads’ broader ES Gaming initiative, which focuses on creating a more accommodating environment in the rapidly growing gaming industry. The initiative promotes accessibility and connection among gamers of all abilities — whether they have disabilities or not.

Beyond simply providing equipment, the lab serves as a place where individuals can explore assistive technology, try different gaming setups, and discover new ways to engage with games they enjoy. As accessible gaming technology continues to evolve, initiatives like ES Gaming continue working toward a future where gaming is truly open to everyone.

This week, the lab is hosting a digital safety talk for parents and caregivers of individuals with developmental disabilities. It will cover:

  • Recognizing and responding to inappropriate content
  • Protecting personal information
  • Understanding online relationships and enticement
  • Preventing situations involving sexting or sextortion
