New TikTok Accessibility Features Improve Viewing and Navigation

TikTok Accessibility

Social media platforms continue to evolve, and many are adding features designed to make digital content easier to access for a wider range of users. TikTok recently introduced several accessibility updates aimed at improving how people view and interact with content on the platform.

One of the newest features being tested is AI-generated alternative text for photos. Alternative text — often called “alt text” — is a short written description of an image. Screen readers can read this description aloud, allowing people who are blind or have low vision to better understand visual content. While creators can still add their own descriptions, TikTok is now testing artificial intelligence that can automatically generate alt text for images when none is provided.

TikTok has also added an option to increase color contrast within the app’s accessibility settings. This feature enhances the visibility of text, icons, and interface elements by making foreground colors stand out more clearly from the background. Higher contrast can make the app easier to navigate for individuals with low vision or sensitivity to low contrast displays.

Another update includes support for bold text settings. If a user has bold text enabled on their device, TikTok will automatically display text within the app in bold as well. This can improve readability for users who benefit from stronger text visibility.

These new features build on several existing accessibility tools already available on TikTok, including auto-generated captions, text-to-speech options, and customizable display settings.

As social media continues to play a major role in communication and entertainment, accessibility features like these help ensure that more people can participate in digital spaces — whether they are watching videos, sharing photos, or connecting with others online.
