Melessa Wisehan has always valued learning and helping others. Born in Jackson County and a graduate of Seymour High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and Speech Communications, followed by a master’s degree. Her career included 15 years as a librarian, time as a Youth Development Educator at Purdue University’s Extension Program, and tutoring students in a GED program within a correctional facility.

In 2012, Melessa began losing vision in her right eye, and in 2024 she lost vision in her left eye due to ocular histoplasmosis. As a result, she can no longer drive, read printed materials, or recognize faces and facial expressions. Even close-up tasks like cutting her fingernails have become difficult.

After learning about assistive technology services, Melessa reached out to Blake Allee, Demo and Loan Lead for The INDATA Project at Easterseals Crossroads. The INDATA Project provides device demonstrations to people with disabilities, their families, and professionals in education, health, and related fields. These demonstrations help participants understand how devices can assist with communication, daily living, computer access, recreation, learning, vision, hearing, home automation, and more. Demonstrations are available both in-person and online via video conferencing.

Blake visited Melessa’s home several times to showcase different types of assistive technology she could potentially purchase. She initially felt overwhelmed by the options, noting that the equipment can be expensive, and it was difficult to know where to start. Blake brought devices back for her to try again, helping her make informed decisions about her final purchase of the Ruby 10 Digital Magnifier. He also introduced her to helpful low-vision apps such as Seeing AI, Be My Eyes, and the Clearview Magnifier.

Melessa’s goals include reading her own mail and eventually managing the accounting for her family’s farm. Her husband is a farmer, and her mother-in-law currently handles the bookkeeping. As her mother-in-law ages, Melessa hopes to take over this responsibility. She also attends a bi-monthly support group and is interested in learning more about Meta smart glasses, which Blake introduced.

She no longer has to wait for someone to come home to help her read, and she feels empowered knowing she can still contribute meaningfully to her family. She emphasizes the importance of educating oneself and not being afraid to ask for help, crediting the kindness and support of people like Blake for helping her advocate for her needs.

Outside of her assistive technology journey, Melessa enjoys time with her family and her beloved cats. She remains remarkably positive, reflecting on gratitude and continuing to seek new ways to increase her independence and quality of life.
