Speechlabel, a free app from Hable, allows blind and visually impaired users to navigate the world with a simple tap of their phone. It’s basically an audio guide to objects at home, school or the workplace.
Three Easy Steps
First, choose one of four types of labels. There are stickers you can slap on or buttons you can stitch into clothing.
Once you apply the label, scan it with your phone. From there, you’ll be directed to edit the label. Here, you can record whatever information you like — from a simple description of the item to cooking instructions, expiration dates, the types of occasions on which you should wear particular pieces of clothing, etc. Users can record up to an hour of info, or they can re-record anytime.
The NFC stickers and buttons require just a tap with your phone while the QR code labels require a scan with your camera.
You can even set your labels to “public” to share them with the people around you. So, anyone can scan the same label and receive the same information on their phones. This is perfect for helping co-workers use the office coffee machine or giving houseguests a guide to the goods in your pantry.
