HIMS BrailleSense Polaris

HIMS, Inc. is a global manufacturer and distributor that provides a myriad of tools for individuals with visual impairments. One of their newer devices is the BrailleSense Polaris, which is a notetaker jam-packed with lots of features!

The BrailleSense Polaris is an “innovative collaboration of Braille and mainstream technology, offering the blind and visually impaired unprecedented accessible and intuitive productivity in today’s tablet-based world.”

It features a 32-cell Braille display and an 11-key Perkins-style keyboard. Unlike the other BrailleSense devices, the Polaris features CTRL and ALT keys.

  • Optional Sense dictionary including thesaurus and bilingual dictionaries
  • Scientific calculator and full Nemath and UEB math support
  • Read and write text, Braille, and Microsoft Word documents in multiple languages

Entertainment:

  • Search for and play videos on YouTube or stream audio content
  • Certified to use all Google services including the Google Play Store
  • Play and navigate DAISY and NIMAS compatible digital talking books

Braille Terminal and Visual Output:

  • Polaris offers a unique multi-touch 32 cell Braille display that allows users to navigate and control BrailleSense with touch gestures as they read its output in Braille
  • Use Polaris as a Braille display for PC, Mac, smartphones, and tablets
  • Provides visual output via the built-in LCD, HDMI display or via Miracast

Other features include:

  • Unique flippable LCD display and the USB keyboard facilitate “simple and instant communication” for individuals who are deaf-blind
  • Built-in GPS sensor and digital compass help users navigate independently without needing other external devices
  • Long battery life (18 hours)
