For people who are unable to speak or use their hands, a new app for Android is revolutionizing the way they connect with people in the moment.
Designed for users with such conditions as ALS, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis or muscular dystrophy, Project Activate allows people with these disabilities to participate further in group settings by generating brief communication through simple physical gestures.
For example, they could raise their eyebrows to let out a digital cheer at a baseball game. Or they could turn their head to digitally laugh in a comedy club. They could smile to say, “Please come here,” or look up to give their taxi driver a piece of direction.
It’s important to note that “Project Activate is not meant to replace a speech-generating device (SGD). People who typically use an SGD may find Project Activate useful for quickly expressing short phrases like ‘please wait’ or ‘hah!’, as a secondary device, and on its own in situations where it is impractical to set up and calibrate an SGD.’”
