In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), now is a fitting time to share stories like Adonis Moncrief’s.
Partially deaf with a balance disorder, Adonis was able to find work as a part-time janitor through Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana’s partnership with the federal AbilityOne program for people with disabilities. Goodwill went even further in supporting him by including his hand-drawn comic book, Captain Goodwill, in the company’s monthly safety meeting.

“If you were to ask me, Captain Goodwill is Adonis,” said Shawn Wolfgram, senior director of AbilityOne contracts at Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana. “In his leadership role, he has taken on the responsibility to make sure he is safe, his colleagues are safe — and he kept asking, ‘What’s next? What more can I do?’”
Adonis now works full-time as the mailroom supervisor at the Minton-Capehart Federal Building in downtown Indianapolis. Last year, he was selected to speak on behalf of Goodwill at a national event in Washington, D.C. designed to create further opportunities for employees with disabilities.
This Thursday, October 9, Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana is hosting a networking luncheon to promote the opportunities and resources available for employees like Adonis. INDATA will be there among other community partners to talk about what we can offer to ensure employees with disabilities work in a supportive environment.
