Six seconds from now, a cooking-related fire will occur in an American home. In fact, cooking is the number-one cause of home fires in the United States, which cost an average of $35,000 dollars in damages. Don’t fall into one of these statistics.
Leaving the stove on is a common household safety hazard known for causing fires. A new piece of assistive technology is here to relieve that worry.

The Wallflower Smart Plug connects to the outlet behind your electric stove. Downloading the Wallflower app ensures active monitoring across multiple users. For example, a senior and their caregiver could both receive mobile notifications when the stove is turned on, when someone forgets to turn it off or when someone leaves the house while it’s still on (through geofencing). The app tracks the user’s cooking behavior to tell when the stove is on longer than usual.
In addition to these notifications, the Wallflower plug sounds an audible alert from behind your stove when it’s turned on or left on longer than normal.
The Wallflower Smart Plug is currently available through INDATA’s Equipment Lending Library. For more information about this device, check out our Monday Tech Tip video or click here.
