EVENT: INSOURCE Special Education Workshops for Parents & Professionals

During the month of December, INSOURCE will be offering a series of special education workshops for parents and professionals who work with special needs children. Since 1975, the Indiana Resource Center for Families with Special Needs or INSOURCE has provided service to Indiana’s families of infants, toddlers, children, youth and young adults with disabilities.

INSOURCE is a parent organization that provides assistance and support services and educational resources to the community of individuals and organizations that serve and support persons with disabilities. INSOURCE has worked to help countless families confront the complexities and what are often the challenges of having a loved one with special needs.

See below for the dates and additional information of the workshops being offered this month:

Date of Training: 12/6/10
Title/Description: “Preparing for Your Child’s Special Education Case Conference” – In conjunction with the Governor’s Planning Council for People with Disabilities 2010 Conference for People with Disabilities. Case conferences can be confusing and stressful for parents. This session helps parents identify issues of concern, use Article 7 to review how the law impacts those issues, organize documents, prepare information, and communicate effectively during the case conference. This class will help parents become their child’s best advocate and build positive relationships with school personnel. Presented by Mary Delaney and Jennifer Littlefield, INSOURCE Regional Program Specialists.

Title/Description: Fairs/Exhibits – in conjunction with the Governor’s Planning Council’s 2010 Conference for People with Disabilities. There is a registration fee to attend the conference. Materials and information will be available to assist parents in learning about INSOURCE services and programs, general basic special education rights and responsibilities, and transitioning students and children to adult services. Title/Description: “About INSOURCE: A Parent Center” – This workshop will provide innformation about INSOURCE and the services the organization provides to parents/families of children with special education needs and to professionals in the disability community. Information about the Arc of Indiana and the Waiver will also be made available. Presented by Anita Lewis, INSOURCE Regional Program Specialist.

Date of Training: 12/7/10
Title/Description: “Developing IEP Goals” – Guest speaker: Alisa Stovall, M.A., State Trainer, Indiana Effective and Compliant IEP Resource Center. This interactive presentation will focus on the seven basic components that are part of developing IEP goals, federal and state mandates regarding goals in the Individual Education Plan, and the process of creating effective goals towards the educational and functional student outcomes. Training content is based upon “Effective Goal Processes, A Training Module for Educators” by Dawn McGrath, Ph.D. This free training is designed for both parents and educators. Materials and information will be available to assist parents in learning about INSOURCE services and programs, general basic special education rights and responsibilities, and transitioning students and children to adult services. Title/Description: “Advocating for the Special Needs Foster Child” – This training is for foster parents, family case managers, CASAs, judges, teachers, and others who work with foster children. This training is free. Please note that this workshop is for a private agency for licensed foster parents and family case managers only and is NOT open to the public. Pre-registration is requested as seating is limited. Certificates of Attendance will be available. Title/Description: “Effective Communication for Your Child’s Special Education” – INSOURCE and the Anderson Community School Corporation Special Education Department will be providing a training on effective communication for your child’s special education. Title/Description: “Understanding Article 7: Indiana’s Special Education Process” – This session covers basic information about Indiana’s special education law and is designed to help parents, teachers, teacher aides, and others involved in the education of children with disabilities understand  Article 7 and how to apply it to their specific situation.  Information covered includes referral and the evaluation processes, the individualized education program, procedural safeguards for parents and skills for effective communication.  Presented by Jane Fuentes, Regional Program Specialist.
