WRTV aired a segment this week that touched our hearts. The piece was a profile of Medical Mutts, an Indianapolis-based nonprofit organization that trains rescue dogs to serve people with disabilities.

Whether warning their owners of oncoming seizures, reminding them to take their medication, or providing relief from anxiety, these dogs make a life-changing difference. And their jobs as service animals save them as well.

As Director of Development for Medical Mutts Abby Harlan said: “There are so many dogs that need homes and that need the support that we can provide. And there are so many people that are not living the way they could be or they should be.”

Medical Mutts’ Executive Director Jennifer Cattet recalls one woman’s dog helping her fulfill a longtime goal.

“She had never been able to go out on her own, and her dream was to just go do her grocery shopping,” Cattet said. “And the dog that she got from us allowed her to do that for the very first time.”

“The fact that we can give a new lease on life for both of them just gives us a lot of hope,” Harlan added.

The Medical Mutts team is always on the lookout for volunteers to work at the shelter or foster their service dogs in training.
