Access to the Hoosier Outdoors

While the weather is at perfect pre-fall temperatures, now is a good time to plan accessible outdoor adventures here in the Hoosier heartland.

Around this time last year, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) launched a webpage dedicated to helping people with disabilities find motorized wheelchairs for navigating trails as well as accessible places to fish, hunt or have fun in the water.

As this WFYI article highlights, removing outdoor barriers for individuals with disabilities helps people of all ability levels, especially children. For example: “Having lower railings in wildlife viewing areas can ensure someone sitting or a child standing can both see the sandhill cranes. Ramps accommodate both wheelchairs and strollers. A beach mat at Paynetown State Recreation Area in Bloomington makes it so wheelchairs can roll down to the lake — or kids can keep their feet cool and off the hot sand.”

To enhance accessibility, Indiana DNR welcomes feedback on how it can improve its nature properties and outdoor experiences for people with disabilities. If interested, please take the 2025 Guest Survey.
